The New York Yankees will probably be looking for bullpen help as the offseason goes on after the Juan Soto sweepstakes is over. Tim Hill, Tommy Kahnle, and Clay Holmes—three important relievers who combined for 146.2 innings during the regular season—were released by the Yankees.
During the team’s postseason journey to the World Series, this three also pitched a total of 29 innings. Promising pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga, who had Tommy John surgery in April, is also a free agent in addition to these three veterans.
The New York Post claims that the Yankees have inquired about Loaisiga’s condition, but it is unclear if they will bring him back. There aren’t many reliable internal choices on the Yankees’ current roster outside of breakthrough star Luke Weaver, who became the closer in September and during the playoffs.
As he begins his final season with the St. Louis Cardinals under team control, they should trade for two-time All-Star closer Ryan Helsley. The 30-year-old Helsley just finished another outstanding season in which he was named the NL Reliever of the Year and the MLB saves leader in addition to receiving his second All-Star selection.
Helsley went 49 for 53 on save chances over 66.1 innings, recording a stellar 2.04 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 79 strikeouts. From 2022 to the present, the right-hander has been among the finest relievers in baseball, recording 82 saves and a 1.83 ERA.
