Former Everton captain Kelvin Ratcliffe has sadly passed away at the age of 76. Ratcliffe, a beloved figure at Goodison Park, was renowned for his leadership and defensive prowess during a distinguished career in English football.

Ratcliffe began his playing career at Everton, joining the club’s youth ranks in the early 1960s. He made his first-team debut in 1966, quickly establishing himself as a key player in Everton’s defense. Over the course of his career, Ratcliffe made over 250 appearances for the club, earning a reputation as a tough, reliable, and skilled central defender. His ability to read the game and his leadership qualities were particularly evident, culminating in his appointment as club captain in the late 1970s.

During his time at Everton, Ratcliffe won several major honors, including the 1984-85 Football League title, a period in which the club was at its peak under manager Howard Kendall. The team’s strength in defense, with Ratcliffe at the heart of it, was integral to their success. He also played a crucial role in Everton’s victories in domestic cup competitions, including the FA Cup in 1984 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1985.

Ratcliffe’s impact on Everton was not limited to his performances on the pitch. As captain, he represented the club with pride, helping to shape the team’s identity during one of the most successful eras in its history. His leadership, resilience, and commitment to the club left a lasting legacy, and he remains a cherished figure among Everton supporters.

After retiring from playing, Ratcliffe remained involved in football, taking on coaching and punditry roles. His passing marks the end of an era for Everton fans, who will always remember him as a true club legend.
