Regardless matter how this season turns out, the Minnesota Vikings will have a new starting quarterback for the following campaign. Trey Wingo, a former ESPN employee, reported as much on Wednesday, November 27.
Wingo broke the story earlier in the day after Minnesota signed former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones as a free agent. “It makes perfect sense for the Vikings to acquire Daniel Jones. Wingo wrote on his X account on Wednesday afternoon, “[Sam] Darnold won’t be back with the [Vikings] no matter what happens the rest of this season, according to sources.
This gives Jones a chance to play next season if 1st-rounder J.J. McCarthy struggles.”During a press conference Wednesday, Darnold expressed his thoughts on the team’s choice to ink Jones. Being able to work with him as a teammate makes me extremely happy. He’s a great guy; I’ve spent some time with him before. Thus, I’m just eager to have him join us as a teammate. This football club will benefit from his ability to draw on his extensive football playing expertise in specific areas.
I’m thrilled for him to be able to join this group because we have wonderful individuals here, including the coaching staff, the locker room, and the organization as a whole. In large part because Darnold was a strong contender for MVP during the first month of the season, the Vikings are 9-2 and in second place in the fiercely competitive NFC North Division.
Although he has now calmed down, he is still having a stellar season in his debut season under offensive coordinator and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. According to Pro Football Reference, Darnold has passed for 2,712 yards, scored 21 touchdowns, and drew 10 interceptions this season.
It is anticipated that his 2024 performance would result in a substantial increase in the quarterback’s yearly salary from the $10 million Minnesota is currently paying him to approximately $32.5 million during a new four-year contract.
