WORLD OPEN SNOOKER 2024 RECAP: RONNIE O’SULLIVAN ENDS BID IN CHINA AFTER LUCA BRECEL TAKES ON STEPHEN MAGUIRE

On Wednesday, the World Open advances to the round of 32. Luca Brecel, the current world champion, will face Stephen Maguire in the opening match. Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby, and Judd Trump will play later. Judd Trump faces Fan Zhengyi, Selby faces Long Zehuang, and The Rocket faces Lyu Haotian.

    BRECEL 1–3. MAGUIRE (24–6)
Luca soon realizes that he needs to win this frame and screws into the pack off the black, landing on little. In an attempt to send one long to the green, he leaves a red at the base of the cluster and a plant for good measure, but he does it with caution! Stephen chooses the latter, to the mild chastisement of Fergal in communications for not making sure he’d left one. An important visit is approaching.
    WE ROUND THE TABLES AGAIN.
    Cao Yupeng (0–4) Ding Junhui
    Dominic Dale 1-2 Lilley, David
    Ashley Hugill 1-2 Wilson Kyren
    Robert Milkins 2-2 Vafaei, Hossein
    Joe Perry 0–3 Murphy Shaun
    Walden, Ricky 2-1 Ben Woollaston
    Robbie Williams 1-2 Barry Hawkins
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 1-3
Yes, Stephen takes the required action, and Luca faces an issue. I’ll see you in fifteen.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 1-2 (50-44)
Stephen is calmer than usual today, but he needs the colors brown, blue, and pink to cover their locations for the frame.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 1-2 (50-19)
A displeased Luca plays a risky safety that leaves a starter, gets out of position, and now Stephen has a great opportunity to grab this enormous frame. Is he able to go past the last three reds on the table’s edge? Everything is going OK so far.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 1-2 (43–13)
This has been a really entertaining mini-match of snooker; both players are excellent with the ball and have malicious intent when attacking.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 1-2 (20–13)
Not for very long. Due to the balls’ current condition, Luca has a chance at one to left-center after a poor positioning shot. He flicks it in and continues the run with a superb long red. With the balls in play, this might result in a 2-2 score at the half.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 1-2 (0-11)
Stephen gives a great cue to sink a starter into the right corner, but before he can get up the table, a yellow brings him out of position. Whatever: Luca gives him a chip to chip thin into the right corner, which he does, and he disappears once more.
    BRECEL 1-2 MAGUIRE
After a few pots each, we end up playing safe because Luca arrives early and is unable to position himself onto a second red from the black. We end up re-racking, the boys tapping about, and going nowhere.
    ABOVE THE TABLES
    Cao Yupeng (2-0) Ding Junhui
    Dominic Dale 1-0 Lilley, David
Ashley Hugill (0) 1 Wilson Kyren
    Robert Milkins (1-0) Vafaei, Hossein
    Joe Perry 0–2 Murphy Shaun
    Ricky Walden 0–1 Ben Woollaston
    Robbie Williams: 0–1. Barry Hawkins
    BRECEL 1-2 MAGUIRE
Luca is on the board, and it’s a beautiful 77.
    MAGUIRE 0-2 BRECEL (56-5)
Luca is enjoying himself now and handling these well. He’s quite excellent at accepting each visit as it comes; if he’s playing someone he can punish, his negligence is his issue. However, for the time being, this is a fantastic run, and there’s no reason to believe that he won’t draw to within one at the conclusion.
    MAGUIRE 0-2 BRECEL (17-5)
Luca manages to find a starting from Black Cush, beautiful goods into the green bag, hehe. He has swiftly pulled the story off the yellow, and this is the opportunity Stephen believed he had just moments before.
    BRECEL 1-2 MAGUIRE (12–5)
Once more, Stephen takes advantage of Luca’s break—he really has to fix that—stroking down a beauty to the left corner. However, the white seemed to pick up speed after a brown, rolling into the pack, so when another significant break appeared possible, it was a safety; he fouled-missed in search of the thinnest contact, then again, again, again, until brushing his preferred red.
    ABOVE THE TABLES
    Cao Yupeng (2-0) Ding Junhui
    Dominic Dale 1-0 Lilley, David
Ashley Hugill (0) 1 Wilson Kyren
    Robert Milkins: 0–1. Vafaei, Hossein
    Joe Perry 0–1 Murphy Shaun
    Ricky Walden 0–1 Ben Woollaston
Robbie Williams not playing Barry Hawkins
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 0-2
Though both players had opportunities to win the frame, Stephen takes the lead and appears to be a little more reliable than the world champion.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 0-1 (48–73)
Stephen dribbles it home off the jaw, spanks down a straight brown, and that’s the frame! He’s not perfect on the green, and needs the rest to cut it into its own bag from practically right above it! Luca is going to be feeling really bad.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 0-1 (48-51)
Indeed, he saves it until last, but have a peek! Why does Luca shoot a pink into his right middle jaw’s near jaw? how?—so Stephen steps up to meted out the appropriate penalty. It will be 2-0 in this match.
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 0-1 (31-51)
Luca removes the only challenging ball on black cush with composure. However, I would anticipate him to go behind it and send it flying.
    MAGUIRE (8-51) BRECEL 0-1
Oh, he undercuts and moves to the middle instead! Luca’s immediate opportunity! For him, the balls are there!
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 0-1 (0-51)
Luca lost the opening two frames yesterday but won five in a row thanks to a fantastic mid-distance red to left corner that kept Stephen at the table. He has one opponent, so I’m not sure if he’ll be able to do it. After examining a blue for some time, he breaks the pack and cracks it home. His placement isn’t ideal, but it’s adequate: red long to yellow bag, and he should be in the frame.
    BRECEL 0–1 MAGUIRE (0-0-17)
After Luca overcuts a lengthy red by an aeon, Stephen escapes with a slot to the left corner and approaches the black area right away. He has a lot of points available to him.
    ABOVE THE TABLES
    Cao Yupeng (0-0) Ding Junhui
    Dominic Dale (0-0) Lilley, David
    Ashley Hugill (0-0) Wilson Kyren
Robert Milkins (loss) 0 Vafaei, Hossein
    Joe Perry 0–0 Murphy Shaun
    Ricky Walden (0-0) Ben Woollaston
Robbie Williams not playing Barry Hawkins
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 0-1
A streak of eighty-four ended with a missed double, but he cannot. However, what a start the former world number two has made.
    MAGUIRE 0-0 BRECEL (0-79)
Stephen has done incredibly well, using these without the need for recuperation flourishes. Can he change units to tons?
    MAGUIRE BRECEL 0-0 (0-54)
Now that claret is all over the place, Stephen ought to complete the frame on this visit. Honestly, he’s now back on the road because he’s a far better player than his record over the past two years suggests.
    BRECEL 0-1 MAGUIRE (0-0-26)
If Luca performs like he did yesterday, he could be in trouble because, despite his brilliance, there was also a lot of carelessness, and Oliver Brown—who did okay, but couldn’t capitalize on his opportunities—is a far better player than Stephen. And, shonuff, Stephen rapidly builds up and breaks the pack neatly while Luca makes a mistake with his break that gives up a chance.
