Chicago Cubs Announce Ernie Banks Memorial Advisory Role
Chicago, IL – The Chicago Cubs organization has announced the creation of the “Ernie Banks Memorial Advisory Role,” an honorary position to celebrate and uphold the legacy of the late Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, affectionately known as “Mr. Cub.”
The role will involve key community engagement initiatives and advising on baseball operations from a legacy perspective. The Cubs plan to use this position to foster the spirit of positivity, inclusivity, and passion that Banks embodied throughout his career and beyond.
Banks, a two-time National League MVP, spent his entire 19-season career with the Cubs from 1953 to 1971, becoming an iconic figure in the sport. Known for his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game, his catchphrase, “Let’s play two,” became a mantra for baseball fans everywhere.
The team’s president of baseball operations, Jed Hoyer, said, “We’re thrilled to create a role that honors Ernie’s impact on the Cubs and the city of Chicago. His values and passion will continue to inspire generations of players and fans.”
The Cubs will consult the Banks family and longtime advisors in filling the role and plan to announce further details during a pre-game ceremony at Wrigley Field early next season.
