Oh I hope so, I really do, This is one story that I just hope is 100% fact. It would show the stupidity of football. The sense of ‘schadenfreude’ – revelling in another’s misfortune – would be enormous. Suggestions yesterday linking Manchester United with Julen Lopetegui left me stunned.
There is a phenomenon knows as the Peter Principle: The idea that people will get promoted up to a point where they are no longer qualified, leaving the organisation full of incompetent employees. Julen Lopetegui is the living proof that such a theory is alive and well- but in football, it is repeated endlessly.
Failed at Real Madrid. Failed at Spain. Failed ( and walked out) at Wolves. Failed at West Ham. Who writes Lopetegui’s CV’s? There must be huge ‘creativity’ going on behind the scenes to make Lopetegui even in consideration for the job at Manchester United.
The Red Devils have made mistake after mistake, the club is in free fall and loyal employees are being sacked to save roughly the same amount of money the club blow on the skipper’s weekly massages.
And into that arena will stroll Julen Lopetegui – the head coach of chaos-ball whose communication skills challenge even the most experienced interpreters, let alone Premier League footballers. It is car-crash tv of the most compelling kind and it will see Manchester United doomed to fail.
And onto that West Ham fans can add-on the reported £7 million financial benefit to West Ham if Lopetegui takes another job.
Priceless.
What kind of muddled thinking even puts Lopetegui in the frame for consideration? This has the capacity to be the biggest cock up of the decade. Come on Glazers, Come on Jim Ratcliffe, do it for the fans.
The West Ham fans, that is.
