In a candid interview with TV Insider, Selleck remarked, “I’m kind of frustrated… I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for ‘Blue Bloods’ but about it still being wildly successful.”
Since its debut in 2010, “Blue Bloods” has been a consistent ratings powerhouse for CBS, often dominating Friday night viewership. The series, which delves into the lives of the Reagan family—a dynasty of New York City law enforcement officers—has garnered a dedicated fan base over its 14-season run. Despite its success, CBS announced in November 2023 that the show would conclude in the fall of 2024.
Selleck highlighted the show’s impressive performance, noting that it ranked ninth out of the top 100 shows for the 2023-2024 season. He emphasized that if a network were offered a show that could “guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,” it would be “almost impossible to believe.”
Reflecting on the series’ conclusion, Selleck shared that his final scene was a family dinner—a poignant bookend, as it mirrored the first scene he ever shot for the show 15 years prior. He admitted that adjusting to the end of “Blue Bloods” would “take a while,” underscoring the deep bond he shares with his fellow cast members. “The family of actors is as close as the Reagan family and the characters that they play,” Selleck stated.
Despite the network’s decision, Selleck remains hopeful about the show’s future. In a May 2024 interview with CBS News, he expressed optimism, stating, “I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses.” He also dismissed any notions of retirement, affirming his passion for acting and his desire to continue working in the industry.
