In an emotional press conference on Saturday, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales stunned the NFL world by announcing his retirement from coaching. The 43-year-old coach, known for his passion and dedication to the game, was visibly overcome with emotion as he shared his decision.
“This is one of the hardest decisions of my life,” Canales said, his voice cracking. “Football has been my everything—my career, my passion, and my family’s journey for decades. But now, it’s time to step away and focus on being present for my wife and kids. They’ve sacrificed so much for me, and it’s time for me to give back to them.”
Canales, who joined the Panthers in January 2024, was tasked with leading a team in transition, highlighted by developing rookie quarterback Bryce Young. While the season proved challenging with a 3–11 record, Canales remained optimistic about the team’s future.
“This organization has a bright future,” he said. “The players, the staff—they’re building something special here. I may not be on the sidelines, but I’ll always be their biggest fan.”
Canales’ retirement marks the end of an impressive coaching career spanning over two decades. From his beginnings at USC to his 13 years with the Seattle Seahawks, where he earned a Super Bowl ring, to his time as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Canales has left an indelible mark on the game.
As he addressed reporters, Canales was joined by his family, who stood by his side as he wiped away tears. “This game has given me more than I could ever imagine,” he said. “I’m forever grateful.”
Tributes poured in from players, colleagues, and fans alike. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith tweeted, “Dave is more than a coach—he’s a mentor and a friend. Wishing him all the best in this next chapter.”
