ALI CARTER, JOHN HIGGINS, MARK ALLEN, AND JUDD TRUMP JOIN THE GERMAN MASTERS SNOOKER IN THE LAST 16
Judd Trump defeated Matthew Selt 5-2 to advance to the German Masters’ round of 16.
Mark Allen, John Higgins, and Ali Carter—who also triumphed in his evening match—join Trump.
Kyren Wilson defeated Ben Woollaston with breaks of 96, 136, 53, and 67 to get to the final 32.
In other matches, Mark Davis defeated Barry Hawkins 5-1 and Tom Ford defeated Xiao Guodong.
On Wednesday night in Berlin, Judd Trump defeated Matthew Selt 5-2 to go to the round of 16 in the German Masters.
Throughout the year, Trump has shown remarkable form,
winning the English, Wuhan, and Northern Ireland Opens and finishing in the semi-finals of the UK Championship,
European Masters, World Grand Prix, and Champion of Champions.
With the exception of an appearance in the English Open quarterfinals, Selt has had a difficult season.
Trump won the opening frame 68–33 to take the lead, but Selt tied the score at 1–1 with a 63–break that gave him his first half-century of the match.
Trump regained the lead with the identical response break in the third, and he moved two frames closer to victory in the next one with a 97.
As he improved, he broke the century mark in the fifth frame with a break of 118, three points ahead of Selt,
who scored just 14 points in the three losses in a row.
Trump won the match after a further half-century, but Selt managed to stay in the game with an unanswered 79 to trim the lead to one.
In a different evening match, Ali Carter defeated Pang Junxu 5-2 with little trouble.
Earlier, Mark Allen defeated Joe O’Connor 5-2, while Kyren Wilson defeated Ben Woollaston 5-1 to advance to the final 32.
Wilson secured his spot in the following round with a 136 break and three half-centuries.
Wilson will look to win his first ranking title of the year when he takes on David Lilley, who defeated Ricky Walden 5-4.
Wilson led after Woollaston won the opening frame and failed to score in the following two.
With a break of 96 to level it 1-1, the world No. 10 narrowly missed a century and went on to win the third session 92-0.
Wilson led 3-1 at the halfway point of the session after a break of 136.
Wilson won a close fifth frame and completed the victory with a break of 67.
Although Allen hasn’t quite reached the same heights as he did in the previous season
when he won three ranking events, including the UK Championship
he has nonetheless demonstrated his talent to be considered one of the tour’s most dangerous players.
The world No. 3 was a defeated semi-finalist at the Masters this year,
but after winning the Champion of Champions and the Shoot Out, his season took off.
Although his opponent is not in the top 30, the 28-year-old already has some well-known opponents on his list
after defeating Allen at the Players Championship in February of last year.
O’Connor won the opening frame 63–50, while Allen barely reached a century in the following one.
O’Connor then scored a flawless 69 to take the lead again, but Allen responded with a spirited 2-2 frame.
Allen took the lead for the first time in the game after another half century, and he went on to lead 4-2.
Allen then made a comeback for the last frame of the match, winning with a break of 74 to advance to the next round.
Although he hasn’t been at his best this year,
John Higgins has made four semi-final appearances already, which is a noticeable improvement over last season.
One of the sport’s most promising young players, Zhou Yuelong, 26, tied the score at 3-3 with two half-centuries
and a break of 127 over the next four frames after falling behind the former No. 1. Higgins scored 89 in the sixth frame.
The seasoned Scot won the seventh game to go one frame closer to victory, and he crossed the finish line with a 97 in the next.
World No. 60 Mark Davis, meanwhile, upset everyone by defeating world No. 15 Barry Hawkins 5-1.
Hawkins only managed a 49% pot-success percentage during the match because to his inability to get going.
To go ahead, Davis scored four half-centuries: 89, 66, 54, and 63.
In another match, Tom Ford defeated Xiao Guodong 5-1 to advance to the round of 32.
Ford used breaks of 93, 84, 52, and 62 to string together the first four frames of the match.
In the fifth frame, Xiao scored, but Ford went on to seal the victory.
