Johnny Nelson Wants the Former Champion to Remain in Retirement: “Never Do That!”
When it comes to return speculation, one former world champion has been advised by former WBO cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson to avoid making a comeback fight.
In a rivalry that began in the 1990s, Conor Benn was always mentioned as being involved in a fight with Chris Eubank Jr. Their fathers engaged in two squared circle bouts to resolve their differences, with Eubank Sr. winning by knockout against fan favorite Nigel Benn in the first round and the two fighting to a draw in the second.
Benn will fight on February 3 in Las Vegas despite his continued issues with the British Boxing Board of Control, as the negotiations for the bout have already fallen through.
Before the match was announced or possibly later on, Kell Brook, the former IBF welterweight champion, was mentioned. Brook hung up the gloves following an amazing victory over his own longtime foe Amir Khan in February 2022.
Nelson, Brook’s former stablemate, advised “Special K” to turn down any offers in an interview with Pro Boxing Fans.
“I hope Kell never returns. I believe that Kell will eventually get the chance to cash in on a successful return fight. I hope he never returns because Brendan [Ingle] always warned us not to turn God into a business. Although Kell is dissatisfied and bored, I’m confident that most guys would be enticed to come out of retirement if a sizable carrot is placed on the table.
“That’s my personal viewpoint; I speak for Kell.” I’ve known Kell since we were little, but if he were to ask for advice, I would tell him not to do it. That is his call, his yell.
Although Brook has acknowledged that the Benn fight would provide him with the right motivation to practice, he has also been connected to fights with Eubank and Liam Smith.
